Stories dance, so dance to me is never abstract.
My solo performances are often structured improvisations exploring the relationship between movement and story. I am intrigued by the features of genres that combine text and movement, narratives whether linear or non-linear, and the idea of structure and agency. I explore folktales, archetypes, and histories.
Being born in Britain and moving to Nigeria when I was 8 years old sparked these interests. Not knowing how to speak Yoruba I homed in on the beauty of body language, gesture, onomatopoeia, and the rhythms of social interaction. I revelled in dance. The how of dance as much as the what.
I make performances that investigate personal patterns and movement choices amidst cultural aesthetics and forms, the relationship between the individual and society, and creativity and tradition. I go on journeys of fun, laughter, and reflection.
